The View From My Window

The View From My Window

The View From My Window project has two main phases, each exploring the view from participants' windows and their ideas about their local area. The first involves adult participants who have moved to Bury learning and using skills in drawing, print making, textiles, graphics and painting to tell their story. They choose skills and materials to create 2 pieces: the view from their home in Bury and the view from their home in the country they grew up in. Commentaries will be created for each piece. Participants will also be asked to describe what they would like to see that would make their life in Bury better. The artwork and commentaries will then be used in 10 school workshops to facilitate creations of similar pieces and commentaries by children. Ten 2-hour workshops will be delivered to 10 primary classes in Bury. The workshop will focus on identity and community cohesion. Having seen how the art and commentary provide a means by which the participants can demonstrate who they are, where they come from and the hopes they have for building a happy and prosperous life in Bury, the children will discuss what they would put into a picture of what they can see from their window. Each one will then create their own piece. Through careful questioning, they will be supported in expressing their thoughts and feelings about what they see: the places they go to, the people they see, the things they do, etc. Finally, they can imagine what they would like to see in the picture that would improve life for them, their family and friends. Children will record their ideas, thoughts and reflections in writing.

Participating schools will receive a virtual exhibition of the artwork and commentaries and the finished pieces will be displayed for the public.

The View From My Window project is running between November 2026 and February 2027. It is a community-led arts, culture and heritage project funded by Bury Culture Fund.
