Bury Schools Linking Project
Bury Schools Linking Project is run in partnership with The Linking Network, which leads similar projects across the country. Our experienced staff work with teachers from schools across Bury to develop the Linking Network themes, lead professional learning and organise and lead shared events.
The Schools Linking Project aims to support children and young people to explore identity, build connections & strengthen communities so we can all live well together.

Secondary Schools Linking- Holocaust Art project Who am I?
Using a Holocaust Memorial Art project as a central theme, students from 3 secondary schools in Bury, St Monica’s, Bury Church and Elton met to explore the 4 key questions which make up the structure of Schools Linking. The Holocaust Art sessions were delivered by Caroline Slifkin, an independent Holocaust Arts educator. Funding from the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) made this additional element to the Schools Linking Programme possible.

Following input about art created by Holocaust victims and survivors, students reflected on their own identity and how they could represent it in a self-portrait. They then met at each other’s schools and started to create their art pieces.

The final session was a celebration of what the students had achieved over the course of the project. The schools got together at Bury Art Gallery in February 2026 where they showcased their work. There was also a guest speaker from the Northern Holocaust Education Group who talked about her grandfather’s life in Germany before the Nazi Party took control and how he fled to safety on the Kindertransport. It was a moving and thought-provoking presentation that made the students reflect on the effects of the Holocaust on everyday people.
Students’ artwork was displayed at the Mill Gate Centre in Bury, near the world-famous market, from May to July 2026. All work was then returned to students. Each student received a calendar show-casing their work as a thank you for taking part in the project.
This project was delivered as part of the Bury Schools Linking Programme. As the local lead for the programme, Fair Futures would like to thank our funders, staff and students from St Monica’s, Bury Church and Elton for making this year’s Secondary Schools Linking such a success. Thanks also go to the Mill Gate Shopping Centre, Bury, for allowing us to display the students’ artwork in the heart of the community and to Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre for screening a slideshow of the project. Finally, we would like to say a special thank you the Association of Jewish Refugees whose generous funding made this project possible.
